Look at the work

Brushes transform a row of containers into a workshop scene

The pot occupies the lower center. Its brushes fan out and cross the vertical silhouettes of a large jug and a black bottle placed against the bottom.

The yellow bowl on the left receives the strongest light, while the brown pitcher on the right blends almost into the shadows. A small dark band crosses the background and ties all the objects to the table.

Still life with brushes in a pot F60/JH540 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel of 31.5 × 41.5 cm, painted in Nuenen in November 1884 and kept in a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The canvas assembles very simple shapes: cylinders, handles and long sticks. The difference in color and height is enough to produce a precise rhythm.

01

The brushes open the composition

Their sleeves spread left and right. They break the stiffness of the bottles while bringing attention back to the central pot.

02

The yellow bowl becomes the bright focus

Its acidic color contrasts with the darker ochres. Placed in the foreground, it balances the dark mass of the right pitcher.

03

Objects stand out through their outline

Van Gogh models volumes little; it especially reinforces the edges, handles and openings with brown or black lines.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F60/JH540, the format of 31.5 × 41.5 cm and the date of November 1884 identify this still life from a workshop to a private collection.

Subject

The painter's tools are at the center

Unlike Nuenen's other pottery still lifes, this one clearly shows several brushes and connects household objects to workshop practice.

Series

A variation among the containers from November 1884

Van Gogh changes the order, height and colors of pots and bottles to study the balance of familiar objects.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the range of brushes, the red pot, the yellow bowl, the two rear silhouettes, the brown pitcher and the dominant ocher.

  • The five rounds visible above the pot
  • The dark green edge of the yellow bowl
  • The red reflection on the central pot
  • The black bottle placed behind
  • The handle and beak of the brown pitcher on the right
