The green bank dominates the Clichy bridge
The slope occupies almost two thirds of the small composition. A narrow path starts from the lower edge and goes up towards the houses, giving the viewer the feeling of being placed at the foot of the embankment.
The bridge only appears partly to the right, under a vast lilac gray sky. The acidic yellows of the grass and light green foliage make the shore brighter than the water.

The modest format does not prevent very precise construction. Van Gogh contrasts the organic diagonal of the embankment with the horizontal lines and arches of the bridge.
The path opens the depth
Its light stones follow one another from the foreground to the houses and prevent the green mass from closing the view.
The bridge remains deliberately off-center
Thrown to the right and partially cut, it acts like a fragment of a city seen from a still wild shore.
The sky softens the yellows
The bluish grays and lilacs calm the intensity of the yellow-green foliage, treated with small vertical touches.
