The wind transforms verticals into movement

The three trunks in the foreground dominate the very high format. The middle one tilts diagonally and breaks the stability of the other two. Behind them, a row of smaller poplars describes a curve that moves to the right; a low strip of bank and vegetation is enough to anchor the pattern.

The blue-gray sky and lilacs cross the voids of the foliage. The crowns mix dark greens, blues, whites and some pink accents, without compact mass. The keys follow several directions: vertical on the trunks, oblique in the agitated branches and more horizontal on the bank.

In W1302, Monet does not paint the wind as an invisible subject: he makes it readable in the inclination, voids and rhythm of each key.

Three trees, a decisive diagonal

The Musée d'Orsay emphasizes the role of the central poplar, whose inclination animates the entire composition. If the three trunks were straightened or spaced regularly, the sensation of gusting would disappear.

A view from the shore or the boat

Monet observes the Limetz trees from a low level, often near water. This low angle explains the trunks which extend beyond the upper edge and the small space given to the ground.

A series between Millstones and Cathedrals

The Poplars were painted in spring, summer and autumn 1891, immediately after the Meules and before the Cathedrals of Rouen. More than twenty paintings explore variations in light, season and framing around the same alignment.

The trunks remain thin, colorful and slightly irregular. Their silhouette must remain legible without being surrounded, because the passages of sky and foliage contribute to their vibration.

Bluish grays crossed with color

The overall tone appears fresh, but it contains greens, purples, pinks and whites. A uniform gray would cause the wreaths to lose changing light and relief.

Matter03

A material carried by the sense of gesture

The oblique brushstrokes of the branches should not be replaced by a random texture. Their orientation materializes the thrust of the wind and connects the three trees to the movement of the sky.

The row was on the left bank of the Epte, about two kilometers upstream from Giverny. Monet follows his pace from the water's edge and sometimes from a boat.

From Durand-Ruel to the State

Paul Durand-Ruel acquired the painting in 1893. Long kept in the merchant's family, it joined the French national collections by donation in 2002.
