Statuette de plâtre : Torse de femme, vue de visage, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1887-1888 · Paris

Plaster statuette: woman's torso, F216Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A female torso without head or arms stands on a rocky base, seen almost from the front. Cold blues shape the plaster, while a background crossed by midnight blue and beige diagonals gives academic study a very personal tension.

Look at the work

A workshop cast transformed into a monumental presence

The torso occupies all the useful height and seems to be seen slightly from below. The stomach, hips and thighs are constructed by large light planes, gray blue and purple.

Van Gogh does not neutralize the decor as in a school study. The long diagonal touches of the background revolve around the plaster and make the statuette appear alive despite its fragmentary character.

Painted in Paris during the winter of 1887-1888, this oil on canvas is F216/JH1348. The Menard Art Museum dates it from 1887-1888 and indicates dimensions of 73.4 × 54.4 cm.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work contrasts the compact mass of the torso with a very mobile background. The dark blue contours, almost white highlights and purple shadows give the plaster a powerful volume without imitating stone academically.

01

The blue outline sculpts the shape

A dark line follows the shoulder, side and thighs, clearly separating the statuette from the background and reinforcing its monumentality.

02

White is made up of cool colors

Blue, gray, purple and some very pale yellows replace uniform white to describe changes in light on the plaster.

03

The background revolves around the model

Its converging diagonals and visible brush strokes create an energy that contrasts with the stillness of the casting.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The canvas is F216/JH1348, not one of the small studies of torsos kept at the Van Gogh Museum. The Menard Art Museum today gives the dating 1887-1888 and the dimensions 73.4 × 54.4 cm.

Study

An exercise that has become an independent table

In Paris, Van Gogh drew and painted several casts after his visit to Fernand Cormon's studio. This large canvas is one of the most elaborate studies in the series.

Model

The molding belonged to the painter

The plaster depicted was one of the models in his workshop. The cast itself is now kept in the Van Gogh Museum, separate from the painting.

Collection

Menard Art Museum in Japan

The Komaki Museum presents the work in its European collection and describes it as an oil on canvas measuring 73.4 × 54.4 cm.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must restore the volume of the stomach and hips, the dark blue contours, the purple shadows and the diagonal movement of the background without smoothing the material.

  • The torso seen from the front
  • The dark blue outline
  • The purple shadows
  • The bedrock
  • The diagonals of the bottom
