À propos de l’œuvre
L'Usine d'Asnières, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · July -September 1887 · Asnières-sur-Seine
The Asnières Factory, F318Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A factory driveway leads the view between brick buildings, chimneys and piles of glass globes; Van Gogh transforms this industrial landscape of Asnières into a mosaic of red, ocher, blue and gray.
Look at the work
The Asnières glassworks under a vibrant sky
The path opens in the foreground then narrows between the workshops. Oblique roofs, fences, carts and chimneys lead to the small dark silhouette placed in the center.
The sky is constructed by a multitude of pale touches of blue, pink and green. On the ground, yellow and purple lines follow perspective, while red roofs anchor both sides of the composition.
In the summer of 1887, Van Gogh often painted in Asnières, northwest of Paris. The Barnes Foundation identifies a glassworks here: the round shapes accumulated at the side of the path are glass balls intended to become lighting globes.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Barnes Foundation dates the work from July to September 1887, preserves it under BF303 and gives its dimensions of 46 × 55.6 cm; the catalogs list it F318/JH1288.
Aisle perspective
The lines of the path, fences and roofs converge towards the middle of the canvas. Van Gogh uses industrial architecture to build a very readable depth.
Glass balls at work
The white and gray clusters on either side are not stones: they are glass awaiting melting in the factory buildings.
Industry painted in color
Rather than limiting the plant to browns and grays, Van Gogh disperses vermilion red, purple, yellow and green in each surface.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The official notice documents the type of factory, the function of the glass globes and the regular activity of Van Gogh in Asnières during the summer of 1887.
A glass factory
The workshops notably produced globes for gas street lamps and interior lighting.
The suburbs in transformation
Chimneys and buildings show industry reaching the surroundings of Paris, a modern subject that Van Gogh treats without pastoral idealization.
The work is on display in Philadelphia
The painting is numbered BF303 and is located in Room 6 of the Barnes Foundation, on the west wall.
