The pose is strictly frontal: hat centered, shoulders broad, hands clasped and knees cut by the frame. This almost monumental stability contrasts with the background fragmented into rectangles of images.
The blue of the jacket returns to the sky and the mountains of prints, while the yellows, pinks and greens of the background reappear in small touches in the face, beard and pants.

A work that belonged to Auguste Rodin
After Tanguy's death in 1894, the portrait entered Rodin's collection. He then joined the museum founded from the sculptor's donation.
