Le Père Tanguy, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1887 · Paris

Father Tanguy, F363Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Julien-François Tanguy sits from the front, hands crossed and gaze calm. Behind his blue jacket, Japanese prints juxtapose Mount Fuji, actors, landscapes and a flowering tree in a dazzling mosaic.

Look at the work

The color merchant becomes a wise man in the middle of dreamed Japan

The pose is strictly frontal: hat centered, shoulders broad, hands clasped and knees cut by the frame. This almost monumental stability contrasts with the background fragmented into rectangles of images.

The blue of the jacket returns to the sky and the mountains of prints, while the yellows, pinks and greens of the background reappear in small touches in the face, beard and pants.

Father Tanguy is an oil on canvas measuring 92 × 75 cm painted in Paris in 1887. This version F363/JH1351 is kept at the Rodin museum under number P.07302.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Rodin Museum highlights the pure colors, complementary contrasts, oriented touches and deliberately flat space of this portrait. Van Gogh thus merges neo-impressionist research, Japonism and careful observation of the model.

01

The pose transforms Tanguy into a tutelary figure

The body occupies the central axis and the hands remain perfectly visible. Nothing in the attitude seeks the worldly effect: presence comes from frontality and calm.

02

The background abolishes the classic depth

The prints are arranged like a wall of colorful leaves. They do not build a real room; they surround the model of a visual world that Van Gogh admired.

03

The blue jacket is covered in directions

Purple, turquoise and dark blue hatching follows lapels, sleeves and buttons. The garment appears strong while keeping the energy visible from the brush.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F363/JH1351 and inventory P.07302 designate the large version of the Rodin museum. Van Gogh painted three portraits of Julien-François Tanguy; the composition reproduced here is the one that the merchant kept until his death.

Model

Julien-François Tanguy, color merchant

Based on rue Clauzel, Father Tanguy supplied artists, sometimes accepted paintings as payment and took works on deposit to help sell them.

Japonism

A tribute surrounded by prints

Van Gogh and Theo collected Japanese images. By placing them behind Tanguy, the painter associates the generosity of the merchant with the wisdom and color of Japan that he imagined.

Collection

A work that belonged to Auguste Rodin

After Tanguy's death in 1894, the portrait entered Rodin's collection. He then joined the museum founded from the sculptor's donation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the symmetry of the pose, the benevolent expression, the crossed hands, the hatching of the jacket and above all the distinct arrangement of the prints of this version of the Rodin museum.

  • Calm face under the green hat
  • Hands crossed in the center
  • The blue jacket with vertical hatching
  • Mount Fuji above the head
  • Multicolored Japanese prints
