Champ de coquelicots, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · May 1888 · Arles
Poppy field, F576Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A carpet of red poppies punctuates a green field under a vast blue sky; a few white farms and orange roofs are enough to locate this small view in the Arles countryside.
Look at the work
Red poppies in the green of Arles
The foreground is filled with long green vertical stems between which touches of red, orange and pink appear. Poppy density increases near the lower edge.
A thin light strip separates the field from the houses. On the right, a group of dark trees frames several farms with cream walls; the blue sky occupies almost half of the canvas.
Van Gogh painted this small landscape in May 1888 and entrusted it a few months later to Second Lieutenant Paul-Eugène Milliet so that he could transport it to Theo. The museum keeps it today under inventory s0033V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Van Gogh Museum notice confirms Arles, May 1888, 24 × 35 cm and the references F576/JH1423.
Red versus green
The small touches of poppies are few in number but very visible thanks to the complementary contrast with the field.
A very low horizon
The houses form a thin line between earth and sky. This economy gives the landscape an unusual opening.
Simple directions
The vertical stems of the field, the horizontal bands of the distance and the square touches of the sky clearly structure the small format.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
This painting belongs to the intense outdoor production of Van Gogh's first months in Arles.
Entrusted to Paul-Eugène Milliet
The museum documents Milliet's passage of the work in mid-August 1888 so that she could join Theo in Paris.
Only 24 × 35 cm
The small support reinforces the simplicity of the composition and the precision of the red keys in the field.
s0033V1962
The work belongs to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation and is currently reported as exhibited by the museum.
