Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Rain: wheat field, F650Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

White, pale blue and mint green lines cross a freshly sown field: from his room in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, Van Gogh paints the rain like a veil placed in front of the landscape.

Look at the work

Rain seen from the asylum room

A light brown furrow descends diagonally from the middle left and separates two expanses of plowed land. The field, seen from above, rises to the ocher wall which closes the horizon, with a few trees and buildings barely visible.

The long oblique hatching of rain follows neither the furrows nor the perspective. They remain in the foreground like a transparent grid. In the distance, the gray and blue hills disappear under an almost white sky.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art links the composition to an October 1889 downpour that forced Van Gogh to work from the inside. This is the only view of this field where it directly represents rain.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum preserves the work under number 1986-26-36; F650/JH1839 distinguishes it from other fields observed from the same window.

01

Two superimposed spaces

The field recedes towards the hills, while the rain lines seem to float on the surface of the canvas. Depth and flatness remain visible together.

02

A very high horizon

The sky takes up little space. The plowed earth invades the image and amplifies the curved movement of the furrows.

03

Hiroshige Echo

The long diagonals recall the stylized showers of Japanese prints, notably those that Van Gogh had copied in Paris.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

During his stay in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted the enclosed field visible from his room in several seasons, without representing the bars of the window.

Weather

Autumn downpour

Oblique brushstrokes record near rain, while Alpilles dissolve in mist.

Viewpoint

From upstairs

The heavy dive explains the importance given to the ground and the ascending route of the wall which surrounds the area.

Collection

The painting belongs to the legacy Henry P. McIlhenny, entered into the Philadelphia Museum of Art in memory of Frances P. McIlhenny.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the irregular transparency of the rain lines, the cooled greens of the field and the very subtle separation between the hills and the sky.

  • Oblique hatching from the rain
  • The light furrow in the foreground
  • The wall that closes the field
  • Tiny trees and buildings
  • The Alpilles drowned in the gray sky
