Poppy field W677hand painted reproduction

A field of poppies crosses the entire width of the canvas under a vast pale sky, interrupted by a narrow poplar tree and a few trees lower on the horizon. This oil on canvas measuring 58 × 79 cm, painted in 1881, is kept at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen under number 2611 (MK).

Look at the work

Red keys are enough to make the whole field appear

The horizon is low and leaves an unusual place for the sky. The poplar tree placed to the right of the center rises alone in this opening, while the line of trees and buildings remains reduced to a blue and green frieze.

Poppies are just small red, orange and pink marks placed on a network of greens and blues. Their density varies from foreground to distance and creates depth without paths or figures.

In W677, Monet demonstrates that a field can arise from colored ratios: a few red touches, cold greens and a vertical silhouette are enough to organize the space.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A sky that occupies almost half of the canvas

The large, clear space gives the field a feeling of expanse and makes the poplar particularly visible. The composition is based on this contrast between low horizon and isolated vertical.

02

Flowers reduced to their optical effect

The museum emphasizes that poppies are simple touches of light. Monet describes neither petals nor stems: the irregular repetition of red makes one perceive flowering from a distance.

03

The Rotterdam version, W677

The format of 58 × 79 cm, inventory 2611 (MK) and the reference Wildenstein 677 precisely identify this canvas painted in 1881 and entered the museum with the Van Beuningen collection.

Composition01

A unique vertical in a horizontal landscape

Thin poplar gives scale to the sky and prevents landscape bands from becoming static. Its slight irregularity and off-center position must remain accurate.

Color02

Reds that breathe between the greens

Poppy touches are separated by blue-green intervals. If they become a continuous red band, the field loses its vibration and depth.

Matter03

A finer touch towards the horizon

In the foreground, the marks are long and distinct; in the distance, they tighten and blend together. This decrease replaces the traditional perspective.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen preserves Poppy Field, oil on canvas from 1881, 58 × 79 cm, inventory 2611 (MK) and Wildenstein 677.

Period01

The landscapes of Vétheuil

In 1881, Monet still lived in Vétheuil and worked the surrounding fields, banks and plateaus. Ordinary patterns become laboratories of light and color.

Collection02

DG van Beuningen

The museum acquired the work in 1958 with the collection of the industrialist and collector Daniël George van Beuningen. Today it belongs to the modern art department.

Conservation03

Work currently in reserve

The notice from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen indicates that the painting is not permanently presented. Its 2611 (MK) inventory remains the exact reference for this version.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version 2611 (MK), Wildenstein 677
  • The original format of 58 × 79 cm
  • The isolated poplar tree that crosses the vast sky
  • The small red touches spaced in the blue-green field

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal landscape brings a luminous breath to a living room, bedroom or office. An off-white wall, light wood and some earth red or gray blue accents accompany the palette without saturating it.
