Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris
In a dark vase, a dense spray of small yellow flowers opens in front of an almost black brown background. Three red poppies, much more spaced apart, punctuate the left part and the base of the bouquet.
Look at the work
The bouquet is constructed as an irregular mass: wide and compact in the center, lighter in its upper part where isolated stems stand out against the bottom.
The black vase partially merges with the background. Its shape appears only by a few green reflections and by the light brown oval placed on the table, while the red poppies immediately catch the eye.
Painted in Paris during the summer of 1886, Poppy Flowers are an oil on canvas measuring 65 × 54 cm, referenced F324a/JH1137. Stolen from the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil museum in August 2010, the work remains nowhere to be found.
Composition, touch and color
The canvas belongs to the moment when Van Gogh discovered in Paris a richer floral material and a more lively palette. The small flowers are placed in thick, almost sculpted touches, on a deliberately very dark background.
The tight flowers are differentiated by lemon, ocher and cream yolks, with green and brown shadows between the petals.
Their size, bold color and spacing break the concentration of yellow flowers without dispersing the composition.
Painted in blacks, greens and browns close to the background, it gives the impression that the bouquet is emerging directly from the darkness.
Documented benchmarks
The sheet distinguishes the historical data of the work from its current status. The painting is no longer visible at the Cairo Museum: it was cut from its frame and stolen on August 21, 2010.
Catalogs and sources use several titles. The bouquet mainly combines small yellow viscarias with a few very visible red poppies.
Van Gogh then admires the dark and material-laden bouquets of Adolphe Monticelli; this influence can be read in the brown background and the impasto of the flowers.
Already stolen in 1977 and then found ten years later, the work disappeared again in 2010. Recent information confirms that it has not been recovered.
Your reproduction
The copy must preserve the depth of the brown background, the volume of the yellow flowers, the three red poppies, the discreet reflections of the vase and the impasto which gives the bouquet its relief.
