Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Flowers in a glassReproduction of oil painting on canvas

In a transparent stemmed glass, Van Gogh brings together a few stems of blue bellflowers, white flowers and small red touches. The bouquet appears fragile and almost improvised in the face of a largely brushed gray-blue background.

Look at the work

A light bouquet hanging above a white table

The narrow glass is placed slightly to the right of center. Its base and cut are drawn by turquoise contours, white reflections and a few brown touches which reveal the bottom through the container.

The stems fan out towards the upper edge. The blue bells group together on the right, a red flower punctuates the top and the green leaves fall around the glass. A curved line separates the very light table from the gray-blue wall.

The almost transparent glass and the space left empty give this still life an unusual breath, despite the visible vigor of each brushstroke.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F589 work can be recognized by its stemmed glass, its blue bellflowers, the large white table and the gray background constructed by vertical and horizontal hatching.

01

Transparency without illusionism

A few turquoise lines are enough to describe the glass. Van Gogh does not seek a smooth finish: reflections are colored signs which remain perfectly visible.

02

An off-center and airy bouquet

The flowers mainly occupy the right part while a long stem goes to the left. This asymmetry makes the arrangement spontaneous and opens up large areas of background.

03

An almost unpainted table

The cream whites reveal the texture of the canvas and the repetitions of the brush. This calm surface accentuates the finesse of the glass base.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Flowers in a Glass is a 41.3 × 33.3 cm oil on canvas painted in Auvers in June 1890. Listed under F589 and JH2033, it is currently kept in a private collection.

Authenticity

Confirmed by the Van Gogh Museum

At the 2020 Sotheby's sale, the house indicated that the authenticity of the work had been confirmed by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Dating

From Arles to Auvers

Old catalogs sometimes dated it from 1888. More recent research now links it to the small group of floral still lifes painted in Auvers in 1890.

Course

An eventful provenance

Seized from Alfred Lindon during the Occupation, the work was recovered after the war then returned to his heir Jacques Lindon before joining several American collections.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must retain the graphic transparency of the glass, the cold blues of the flowers and the large clear reserves, without artificially thickening the stems.

  • The stemmed glass drawn by a few turquoise contours
  • The blue bellflowers grouped on the right
  • The little red flower near the top edge
  • The curve that separates the white table from the gray wall
