Vincent van Gogh · October 1888 · Arles

La Diligence de Tarascon, F478aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

In the light courtyard of an inn, the large red and green car bears the inscription "Service de Tarascon"; ladder, multicolored wheels and second stagecoach make up the dazzling portrait of an already old transport.

Look at the work

A motionless stagecoach, painted like a character

The main car occupies almost the entire width and shows in profile its red and green body, its large wheels and the luggage piled up on the imperial. An oblique ladder leaning to the left accentuates its mass.

A second car moves back towards the back right under the windows with green shutters. The gray-blue floor, the yellow wall and the blue sky triangle set up a simple decor where the reds, greens, yellows and blacks of the vehicles stand out.

Van Gogh described the painting in his letter of October 13, 1888 and attached a sketch. The LACMA notice links this diligence, surpassed by the railway, to its sensitivity to the transformations of modern life.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F478a/JH1605 canvas measures 71.44 × 92.55 cm. Entered LACMA in 2025, it now bears the number M.2025.139.

01

A vehicle treated in colorful close-ups

Body, doors and wheels are separated by dark contours and bold colors. The effect is less reminiscent of a mechanical survey than of an individualized portrait.

02

Impasto in Monticelli's mind

Van Gogh explains to Theo that cars are painted with impasto. The thick streaks make the brush directions visible on walls, floors and bodies.

03

A composition compared to Monet

In his letter, he compares the layout of his cars to a painting of four boats by Claude Monet: several colorful objects juxtaposed in a flattened space.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The current LACMA notice and correspondence from October 1888 specify the location, measurements, modern context and references of this version.

Literature

Tarascon tartarin in memory

The subject reminds Van Gogh of the old diligence that laments in Alphonse Daudet's novel, read and recommended to his brother.

Modernity

Transport that has become secondary

In 1888, rail largely replaced major stagecoach connections; These cars mainly still serve small towns outside the main lines.

Collection

Van Gogh's first painting at LACMA

Given by the Henry and Rose Pearlman Foundation and his family, the painting entered the collection under M.2025.139.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the red inscription, the precise design of the wheels, the diagonal of the ladder and the impastos which make the yellow wall and the gray-blue floor vibrate.

  • The inscription "Tarascon Service"
  • The four big colorful wheels
  • The ladder oblique against the car
  • Baggage on the imperial
  • The green shutters and the corner of blue sky
