A clear path crosses large sheets of blue and purple irises seen almost vertically. Monet chooses a two-meter format and a plunging viewpoint that could correspond to the Japanese bridge in his garden in Giverny. The flowers are not isolated one by one: they blend into green, turquoise and mauve gestures, while the white preparation remains visible between several passages.

Look at the work

The path winds between the irises and gives a supple depth to an almost entirely vertical composition

The path starts from the lower area, contracts in the middle then goes up to the left. Its whites are mixed with beige, pink and blue. The plant borders encroach on its contours, so that the path remains readable without becoming a rigid line which would cut the canvas in two.

The irises are organized into changing masses. The upper groups are tighter, while the gestures of the lower part rotate and disperse. The flowers are born from a few blue or purple accents placed on the foliage; this economy of detail lets the material of the brush play as important a role as the subject.

Perspective is given by the driveway, but color transforms the garden into a free surface where every gesture remains visible.

Neither the sky nor the distant line of the garden appears. The viewer looks at the ground and flowers from a high point, bringing the composition of a plant carpet closer together without abolishing depth.

The National Gallery observes that Monet laid the driveway before passing the flowers and foliage over its boundaries. These overlaps are essential to maintain the spontaneity of the whole.

Fully active white reserves

Several areas of clear preparation remain visible, particularly between rapid movements. They reinforce the light and breathing of the painting; covering them evenly would weigh down the composition.

Entry into the collection03

Purchased in 1967

The National Gallery acquired the painting in 1967 from the Katia Granoff gallery. It previously came from Michel Monet, the artist's son, and remained in the studio after the painter's death.
