Look at the work

The orange of the flowers ignites a dotted blue background

The bouquet is too large to remain contained in the format: the upper leaves almost touch the edge and several flowers move to the left and right. The heavy, spherical vase stabilizes this expansion.

The silhouette of the fritillaries remains legible despite the profusion of features. Their orange and yellow bells hang under wreaths of tapered leaves, each constructed by long touches that radiate around the stems.

Painted in Paris around April-May 1887, the Fritillaries imperial crown in a copper vase are an oil on canvas measuring 73.3 × 60 cm. The work F213/JH1247 is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under number RF 1989.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Musée d'Orsay brings the dotted touch closer to the background of neo-impressionist research and underlines the complementary opposition of blue and orange. The material, however, changes according to each element: dots in the wall, lines in the leaves, curved reflections on the copper.

01

The blue background is a mosaic of small touches

Blue, turquoise, white and a few yellows are juxtaposed in a tight frame that vibrates the space behind the bouquet.

02

The orange bells hang under the leaves

Their downward orientation precisely distinguishes the imperial crown and creates two luminous arcs on either side of the bouquet.

03

The vase reflects without becoming smooth

Olive green, copper, brown and yellow are laid in broad curved strokes; they suggest rounded metal while retaining the pictorial material.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay provides precise botanical identification and seasonal dating: spring flowering places the still life around April-May 1887.

Botany

One or two bulbs are enough for the bouquet

Each imperial fritillary bulb bears between three and ten flowers. Van Gogh therefore probably assembled the stems from a very small number of bulbs.

Color

Blue and orange, two complementary

The dominant contrast makes the flowers particularly bright, while the greens of the leaves provide the transition with the tones of the vase.

Provenance

Legacy of Count Isaac de Camondo in 1911

The painting entered French national collections through the Camondo legacy before joining the Musée d'Orsay, where it was inventoried in RF 1989.
