Red, pink and white peonies fill the garden under straw racks that filter the light. The canvas shows neither horizon nor sky: flowers, foliage and wooden uprights overlap to the edges, forming a dense plant wall. Signed and dated 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 65.3 × 100 cm is kept at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo under the number P.1959-0153 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1140.

A covered garden where peonies become a tapestry

The upper half is occupied by two strips of straw racks, supported by vertical posts. Under this shelter, the flowers are divided into irregular groups: red in the foreground and on the right, pink and white in the center, purple and pale blue on the left.

The greens change from almost black to bright jade. Red touches repeat horizontally near the lower edge and lead to the large central bouquets. The wooden structure provides some stable lines, but it remains absorbed by the vegetation and the free material of the brush.

The racks do not close the garden: they dim the light and transform the space into an open greenhouse, where each flower appears like a colorful note in the middle of a network of leaves.

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A deliberately suppressed horizon

The garden occupies the entire canvas and seems to continue outside the frame. This proximity takes away from the landscape its traditional depth and announces Monet's immersive floral arrangements.

The structure of the racks as a counterpoint

The straw horizontals and vertical posts organize the scene without stiffening it. Their ocher color balances reds and greens and makes the garden shed readable.

Peonies painted in masses

The flowers are not detailed petal by petal. Whites, pinks, carmines and purples concentrate in thick touches whose contrast with the foliage is enough to suggest bouquets.

Their superposition and dark shadows give the scale of the covered space. They must remain clearly distinct without becoming too regular an architectural design.

Preserve the reds in the foreground

The carmine peonies form a discontinuous rhythm which passes through the composition. Their intensity must be balanced by deep greens, not faded or standardized.

Matter03

Keep the diversity of greens

Blue green, olive, emerald and almost black build several depths in the foliage. A single green tint would crush the flowers and reduce the feeling of lushness.

Giverny01

A pattern created in Monet's own garden

After settling in Giverny in 1883, Monet gradually organized the plantations which nourished his painting. The peonies of 1887 belong to the first major studies devoted directly to this garden.

Collection02

A work from the Matsukata collection

Kojiro Matsukata probably acquired the painting from Monet around 1921. After its transfer to the Japanese government, it entered the National Museum of Western Art in 1959.

The museum associates the work with the reference W1140 and the old number Matsukata M778. The signature and date Claude Monet 87 are in the lower left corner.
