À propos de l’œuvre
Tournesols montés en graines, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August -September 1887 · Paris
Sunflowers whipped into seeds, F377Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two cut sunflower flower heads almost completely fill this small format. The brown-green seeds, dried petals and stem fragments are worked in thick touches on a dark background where the table becomes difficult to distinguish.
Look at the work
Two faded flowers occupy the space like lying faces
The largest sunflower extends diagonally from bottom to right; its dense heart is covered with greens, ochres and reds. The second, darker, folds behind it and forms an almost circular mass in the upper part.
There is no vase or ordered bouquet. The cut stems, curved petals and ripe seeds are shown very closely, at the edge of the frame, while the green-brown background is animated by the same nervous brushstrokes.
Sunflowers mounted in seeds F377/JH1328 is an oil on cotton of 21.2 × 27.1 cm painted in Paris in August - September 1887. Still life belongs to the Van Gogh Museum under number s0121V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The pattern is reduced to two flowers at the end of the cycle. Van Gogh, however, makes this dry matter a field of experimentation: the keys change direction with each petal, seed or fold of the flower head.
The very close-up removes the traditional setting of still life
The flowers almost touch all four edges and are not connected to any container. Their scale in the small painting focuses all attention on their structure.
Brushstrokes follow growth and then wilting
Small, tight commas outline the seeds in the center; around, longer lines accompany the curved petals and dry fibers.
The yellows are contained by a deep green and brown background
Ocher, olive, muted red and blue black prevent the pattern from becoming uniformly golden. This terrestrial range gives weight to mature flowers.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F377/JH1328, the cotton support and the very small format of 21.2 × 27.1 cm distinguish this precise version from other Parisian sunflowers and bouquets from Arles.
Sunflowers appear before the famous Arles vases
During his stay in Paris, Van Gogh first painted flower heads cut and seeded. He would later give the flower a central role in his great bouquets of the South.
The rustic flower interests Van Gogh as much as its color
The Van Gogh Museum recalls that its harsh, inelegant and familiar character of vegetable gardens probably appealed to the painter, who was looking for simple and powerful motifs.
The original measures little more than a sheet of paper
At just 21.2 × 27.1 cm, the work transforms two ordinary flower heads into monumental presence thanks to the tight framing and thick material.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must respect the two superimposed flower heads, the seeds placed in commas, the faded petals, the discreet reds, the cut stems and the green-brown background covered with large traces.
- The large heart of olive-brown seeds in the foreground
- The second dark flower head folded upwards
- The faded yellow petals that line the flowers
- The little red and blue touches in the material
- The deep green background painted in several directions
