À propos de l’œuvre

Vue de Paris aux environs de Montmartre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Spring 1886 · Montmartre, Paris

View of Paris from Montmartre, F265Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

From the heights of Montmartre, the roofs of Paris extend to an almost misty blue line. A vast clear sky occupies more than half of the canvas; in the foreground, a few trees and houses retain touches of green and red.

Look at the work

An immense pale sky dominates the city observed from the Montmartre hill

The houses stack up in the lower part without following a regular grid. Gray roofs, cream walls, fireplaces and gardens overlap, then narrow to the almost abstract strip of the horizon.

The sky is worked by large curved touches of white, sea green and blue. The city, darker and more detailed, thus appears dense in the foreground then absorbed by the atmosphere.

View of Paris from around Montmartre F265/JH1100 is a 45.6 × 38.5 cm oil on canvas painted in spring 1886. Signed "Vincent" at the bottom left, it belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Painted shortly after Van Gogh's arrival in Paris, this view retains the grays and browns of his Dutch period while brightening the sky. The contrast between the urban mass and the atmosphere announces its Parisian transformation.

01

The horizon is placed under the middle

The city only occupies a little more than a third of the height. This decision makes the sky the real main space and enlarges the panorama.

02

The roofs are built in small plates

Gray, brown, cream and red are juxtaposed without exhaustive drawing. Each stain suggests a building while participating in the general vibration.

03

The colorful trees form the threshold of the gaze

The greens and yellows in the foreground are more frank than the tones of the city. They place the painter on still vegetated ground on the mound.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F265/JH1100, the vertical format of 45.6 × 38.5 cm and the red signature at the bottom left distinguish this view from F262, a horizontal panorama preserved in Basel.

Paris

Van Gogh has just joined his brother Theo

Arriving in February 1886, he discovered avant-garde collections and artists. His first Parisian views still show a gradual transition of his palette.

Together

The canvas belongs to a group of four views of the roofs

Van Gogh takes the panorama of Paris from Montmartre by varying orientation, framing and horizon height, without producing an exact repetition.

Provenance

The painting has been documented in private collections since 1926

Its owners acquired it through Galerie Huinck in Utrecht. Sotheby's presented it in London during a sale in 2007.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the vast bluish-white sky, the low horizon line, the dark tower in the distance, the overlapping roofs, the chimneys, the trees in the foreground and the red signature.

  • The wide movements of white in the sky
  • The dark tower located near the center left
  • Gray and cream roofs spreading towards the horizon
  • The green and yellow touches in the foreground
  • The signature "Vincent" in red in the lower left corner
