A piece of meadow observed very closely

The framing plunges directly into the vegetation. The strands rise almost vertically, but small curves and diagonals in the foreground prevent the surface from becoming regular.

The flowers appear as punctual accents: yellow in the upper half, pink and red lower, blue in the middle of the greens. They give a precise rhythm without forming bouquets.

Painted in Paris between April and June 1887, this Carré d'herbe in oil on canvas measuring 30.8 × 39.7 cm is F583/JH1263. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 105.264.

The painting demonstrates the rapid lightening of Van Gogh's palette in Paris. Instead of shaping a meadow by large masses, he observes each stem and constructs the color by juxtaposition.
