Flower garden with path, F429Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A clear path opens in the foreground then goes around flower beds overflowing with flowers. Behind the profusion of greens, reds, yellows and blues, a white wall, dark cypresses and a few roofs firmly hold the horizon.

Look at the work

The path crosses a mosaic of flowers

The path starts from the lower center, widens to the left then disappears behind the massifs. This curve gives a clear depth to a garden whose vegetation otherwise tends to cover the entire surface.

The flowers are not painted as regular dots. Short touches, commas and hatching change direction depending on the flower beds, foliage and soil, making each area distinct.

Painted in Arles in July 1888, this oil garden on canvas measuring 72 × 91 cm is F429/JH1513. It is reported on loan to the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition combines a very readable perspective and an almost textile surface. The path, the wall and the cypresses organize the space, while the colored touches give the flowerbeds their density.

01

The path opens the foreground

Its clear and sinuous shape separates the plantations, places the viewer in the garden and leads towards the back wall.

02

The massifs each have their own rhythm

The reds are tight and punctual, the blues more elongated, the greens treated in hatching which follow the growth of the plants.

03

The white wall calms the profusion

This luminous horizontal band separates the vegetation from the sky and brings out the dark silhouettes of the cypresses.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F429/JH1513 belongs to a pair of gardens painted in July 1888 with F430/JH1510. In a letter to Theo around July 22, Van Gogh reported that the American painter Dodge MacKnight greatly appreciated these two studies.

Together

One of two July gardens

F429 favors the horizontal format and the winding path; F430 adopts a vertical format saturated with superimposed massifs.

Testimony

Studies noted by MacKnight

Van Gogh wrote to Theo that MacKnight had spoken at length about his last two studies of the flower garden, which allows the paintings to be linked at that precise moment.

Conservation

A loan to the Kunstmuseum Den Haag

Collectible references indicate F429 at the Hague Museum in loan form, not as a work of the Stedelijk Museum.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the curve of the path, the separation of the flowerbeds, the line of the wall and the variety of touches rather than reducing the flowers to uniform sowing.

  • The clear and winding path
  • The red and blue massifs
  • The white wall at the back
  • Dark green cypresses
  • The red roofs on the right
