Le jardin de l'hôpital Saint-Paul (« La chute des feuilles », par Vincent van Gogh

Garden of Saint-Paul, The Fall of the Leaves, F651Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A solitary walker advances between the red and blue trunks of the Saint-Paul garden; the high viewpoint, the trees cut by the edges and the leaves carried away give the autumn an almost calligraphic movement.
Look at the work
A leaf fall seen from above
The trunks rise to the foreground without showing their tops. They cut the garden into vertical strips, while the dark figure follows a white path that descends towards the lower edge.
Branches, leaves and ground lines intersect in rapid curves. The cold blue of the background and shadows responds to the red-browns of the trees and the yellow-green of the terrain.
Van Gogh called this painting a "leaffall". He associates the atmosphere of the season with an isolated walker and truncated contours inspired by Japanese prints such as the research of Bernard and Gauguin.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Canvas F651/JH1844, inventoried s0046V1962, measures 73.8 × 60.8 cm and was painted in the hospital garden in October 1889.
Trunks deliberately cut
The frame interrupts the trees at the top and bottom. This choice removes the panoramic view and places the viewer in the middle of the wood.
A high point of view
The terrain seems to tilt towards us, making the path, the small figure and the leaves scattered on the ground very legible.
The season driven by color
Reds, faded yellows, gray greens and cold blues evoke autumn without depending on a meticulous naturalistic rendering.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Van Gogh Museum explains the bold construction of this view and connects it to Japanese prints as well as the works of Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin.
A "leaf drop"
The subtitle comes from Van Gogh himself and emphasizes the season as much as the location depicted.
A lonely walker
The small dark silhouette gives the scale of the garden and accentuates the impression of melancholy calm.
A Japanese framing
The high point of view and the interrupted trunks take up solutions observed in Japanese prints.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must retain the vertical framing, the sinuous contours of the trunks and the balance between warm reds, cold blues and the white path.
- The walker sinks on the path
- The red trunks cut by the frame
- Blue and black branches
- The scattered yellow leaves
- The plunging point of view
