Look at the work

The quarry opens the hill like a vast stone theater

Van Gogh places the viewer at the bottom of the construction site. The extracted stones, planks and embankments form a succession of irregular planes which lead to the small constructions at the top.

The figures are tiny facing the terrain. The brown, green and gray touches describe the rock, grass and earth, while a pale sky brings the composition together without erasing the silhouette of the mills.

The Hill of Montmartre with the stone quarry F230/JH1177 is an oil on canvas of 56.3 × 62.6 cm painted in Paris in June - July 1886. It bears the inventory s0012V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This view combines the still muffled palette of the Dutch years with a freer spatial construction, observed directly in a transforming Montmartre.

01

The construction site occupies almost the entire picture

Blocks, boards, spoil and quarry walls give the foreground a dense material; the city only appears in a crown at the top.

02

The diagonals make you climb the mound

The boundaries of the embankments and the oblique paths start from the lower corners then converge towards the mills and houses.

03

Figures measure site scale

A few workers and passers-by, reduced to colorful accents, make the height of the excavations and the width of the land noticeable.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The large format of 56.3 × 62.6 cm, the inventory s0012V1962 and the references F230/JH1177 distinguish this version from the smaller view F229.

Montmartre

The other side of the mound

In 1886, part of Montmartre was already built, but the side shown retains quarries, wastelands and mills.

Foreground

Stacked wood and stone blocks

The museum notice identifies a pile of wood in front of the cut stones: two materials that Van Gogh contrasts with the direction of his keys.

Pattern

A recognizable Parisian landscape

Van Gogh chose a site also painted by other artists and hoped that a subject familiar to the Parisian public could find a buyer.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the depth of the quarry, the light blocks, the brown wood, the tiny figures, the mills at the top and the muted variations of the terrain.

  • The dark wood pile at the bottom edge
  • The stone blocks in the center of the construction site
  • The silhouettes distributed on the embankments
  • The mills and houses at the top
  • The gray-blue sky that detaches the ridge
