À propos de l’œuvre

La colline de Montmartre avec la carrière de pierre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Paris, Montmartre

Montmartre hill with stone quarry, F229Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A green slope rises towards buildings, palisades and two mills installed at the top of Montmartre. In the foreground, the quarry exposes a light ground where a worker walks in blue; more than half of the canvas is occupied by a gray-blue sky animated by large touches.

Look at the work

Rural Montmartre meets the construction sites of the modern city

The hill forms a large diagonal from the lower left to the mills. Brown fences follow the limits and guide the view towards the buildings grouped on the ridge.

The quarry, the cabins and the blue worker introduce human activity without transforming the view into an anecdotal scene. The houses and wings of the mills remain small under the immense expanse of sky.

The Hill of Montmartre with stone quarry F229/JH1176 is a 32 × 41 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in the fall of 1886. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0064V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh distributes the landscape into three oblique bands: clear quarry, green slope and sky. Palisades connect these areas while mills serve as landmarks on the horizon.

01

The green slope occupies the center as an autonomous form

Long horizontal and oblique touches shape its relief. Green is not uniform: olive, brown, gray and yellow describe the irregularities of the terrain.

02

Blue worker gives career scale

Its small silhouette stands out clearly against the light ground. Without it, the width of the slope and the distance of the mills would be more difficult to measure.

03

The sky preserves the trace of each passage of the brush

Blue, cream, gray and pink are laid in wide short strips. This moving surface balances the heavy stability of the hill.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F229/JH1176, the 32 × 41 cm format and inventory s0064V1962 identify the horizontal version of the Van Gogh Museum.

Montmartre

The north of the mound still retains a semi-rural character

Vegetable gardens, mills, small buildings and old quarry are located a few steps from Vincent and Theo's accommodation, rue Lepic.

Series

Van Gogh created more than thirty views around the mound

It changes point of view and format to study mills, quarries, palisades and gardens. F229 belongs to a group of views of the northern slope.

Signature

The painting bears the Vincent signature at the bottom left

The red of the signature responds to the browns of the quarry. The references F229 and JH1176 avoid confusing it with F230, larger and almost square.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the great green slope, the diagonal palisades, the clear quarry, the blue worker, the two mills and the large nuanced touches which occupy the sky.

  • The blue worker placed at the bottom edge
  • The fence which climbs diagonally towards the summit
  • The buildings and the two mills on the ridge
  • Olive green touches spread across the slope
  • The gray-blue sky which takes up more than half the format
