A row of gabled houses runs along the Amsterdam quay, while several sailboats emerge in the cold light of the port. Monet does not describe each stone: he makes facades, trees, rigging and reflections vibrate with quick touches, under a very high sky which occupies almost half of the canvas. The modern city and the water become two sides of the same atmosphere.
Look at the work
On the left, the narrow facades form a dense architectural mass. Their jagged gables, dark windows and red-brown roofs are indicated with enough precision to recognize the city, but their contours remain crossed by the light. A few trunks and silhouettes connect the buildings to the water's edge.
The composition opens to the right. Triangular sails and masts overlap in front of a clear horizon, while small boats punctuate the pool. On the water, blues, grays, greens and whites are placed in short horizontal touches which extend the movement of the sky.
The subject is not an isolated industry, but a view of the port of Amsterdam where architecture, navigation and winter weather merge in the same moment.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The group of houses occupies the left strongly, then the volumes decrease as the view advances towards the port. This transition gives breadth to the sky and allows the small sails of the distance to maintain a real presence.
Pale blues, pinks, grays and creams intersect in brief marks. The support can sometimes show through under a thin material, which accentuates the feeling of air rather than producing a uniformly covered surface.
The brown and red colors of the facades reappear in the waters near the quay, while the whites and blues dominate to the right. The river is therefore not a simple foreground: it redistributes the entire palette.

Each house has a different silhouette, but the details are abbreviated. Reproduction must preserve this variety without hardening the windows or transforming the dock into an architectural design.
The sky and water mix blue, mauve, pink, green and cream. A neutral gray applied everywhere would make the cold light and atmospheric depth disappear.
Their light triangles are small but precisely placed. They must remain distinct from the masts and chimneys to maintain breathing on the right side.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 61 × 101.5 cm. It belongs to the Rau Collection for UNICEF, bears the GR 1,612 inventory and is listed as Wildenstein 303.
Monet returned to the Netherlands in 1874 and worked in Amsterdam shortly before the first Impressionist exhibition in April. He painted a series of views of the port, canals, bridges and churches under different atmospheric conditions.
The Arp Museum highlights the high winter sky and thin application of color. The ships indicate port activity without becoming a commercial narrative: they are above all markers of scale and depth.
The work belongs to the ensemble brought together by Gustav Rau then transmitted for the benefit of UNICEF. It is today presented as part of the Rau Collection at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, in Remagen.
