À propos de l’œuvre

Iris, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

IrisReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A bouquet springs from a vase almost erased by the light. Long green leaves, blue flowers and nervous contours transform a still life into an experience of color and movement.

Look at the work

Flowers animated by the rhythm of the touch

The irises are not arranged like an ordered bouquet. Their stems cross, the leaves rise diagonally and the corollas open at different heights. The light vase serves as an anchor point, while the whole seems to extend beyond its limits.

The contrast we see today differs from that painted in 1890. The Met states that the purple flowers originally stood out against a pink background; some red pigments have discolored, leaving a background that is now paler. This evolution is part of the material history of the work.

Van Gogh does not just copy a bouquet: he organizes a plant push where each leaf becomes a direction.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The success of this composition depends on the precision of the design, the variety of blues and the continuous movement of the leaves.

01

A network of diagonals

The long, pointed leaves cross like flexible blades. They distribute the energy of the bouquet over the entire width of the canvas.

02

Blues against light background

The petals change from deep blue to purple and bluish white. The pale background amplifies their silhouettes and the general freshness of the image.

03

The vase as a pivot

Treated in a range close to the bottom, the vase does not cut the composition. Its outline and shadow are enough to stabilize the profusion of stems.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The painting belongs to a set of four bouquets painted in Saint-Rémy in the spring of 1890, shortly before Van Gogh's departure for Auvers-sur-Oise.

Series

Four spring bouquets

Van Gogh paints two compositions of irises and two of roses to explore complementary chromatic chords.

Color

A once pink background

The gradual disappearance of certain red pigments modified the initial opposition between the purple irises and the pink background.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must render the precise structure of the flowers while keeping a lively touch. The background should neither crush the petals nor lose its slight variations.

  • The distinct silhouettes of open, faded or even button irises
  • The rhythm of the green leaves and their dark blue contours
  • Shades of blue, purple and white in each corolla
  • The discreet presence of the vase and its shadow on the light plane

In your interior

Floral light for a loose wall

Its horizontal format and its balance between deep blues and light background are suitable for a living room, bedroom or dining room. The composition brings color without the rigidity of an academic bouquet.
