Look at the work

An isolated plant becomes an entire landscape

Van Gogh lowers his gaze to the level of the massif and removes all horizon. The open iris, placed in the upper left half, is accompanied by several blue-purple buttons; the leaf blades occupy almost the entire width and anchor the plant in soil covered with greens, ochres and bluish grays.

Painted shortly after the artist's arrival in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, this study should not be confused with the vast Iris F608 flowerbed kept at the Getty. Here, the vertical framing and concentration on a single foot give botanical observation an almost monumental intensity.

The subject seems modest, but the tight framing, blue contours and circular movement of the herbs transform a garden iris into an autonomous presence.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Loyalty is based on the scale of the plant, the circulation of touches and the contrast between the purple of the flower and the greens of the foliage.

01

A living axis

The flowering stem rises slightly to the left of the center while the leaves spread out in a fan shape. This asymmetrical balance must remain flexible: the plant stands up without becoming rigid.

02

Radiant touches

In grass and dirt, brushstrokes change direction around the foot. They create a centrifugal vibration that connects the flower to the entire field of the painting.

03

Purple versus green

The dark blue-purple of the iris stands out against the yellow and emerald greens. The small yellow accents of the soil reinforce this complementary contrast without competing with the flower.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The support, format and catalog numbers make it possible to distinguish this study from the other irises painted by Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy.

What the painter must preserve

This composition requires precise painting without drying the touch: the leaves structure the format, but the ground must maintain its rapid movement.

  • The exact position of the open flower and purple buds
  • The range of long leaves and their overlaps
  • The dark blue outlines that separate the greens without hardening them
  • The radiant movement of the little touches in the grass
  • The scattered yellow accents that awaken the palette

In your interior

Bright greens enhanced with deep purple

The vertical format is suitable for a narrow wall, between two openings or above a compact piece of furniture. The plant palette provides depth without dominating a light room.
