Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · May 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Iris, F608Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A row of purple irises and a unique white flower fill the frame to the edges. Painted upon Van Gogh's arrival in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the canvas observes the garden at plant height and transforms leaves, flowers and earth into a large decorative motif.

Look at the work

A garden without horizons dominated by flowers

The long blue-green leaves rise diagonally crosswise and fill the center. The purple flowers unfold at different heights, while a white iris on the left breaks the repetition.

The orange-red strip of earth closes the bottom of the painting. At the top, yellow and orange marigolds form a second, smaller frieze, which pushes the irises towards the foreground.

The absence of sky and the bold cut bring the canvas closer to a Japanese print: the garden becomes a rhythmic surface rather than a distant landscape.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Getty keeps Iris under inventory 90.PA.20. The canvas measures 74.3 × 94.3 cm and bears F608/JH1691.

01

The white flower breaks the series

Placed on the left, it immediately catches the eye among the purples. Its difference avoids a purely decorative repetition and gives a starting point for reading.

02

The contours organize the entanglement

Each leaf is surrounded by darker blue. These lines maintain readability despite the density of the stems and petals.

03

The original purples have changed

Getty analyzes show that a red pigment has discolored: many irises that are now blue or indigo were originally more purple.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Iris F608/JH1691 were painted in May 1889 and are housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum under number 90.PA.20.

First day

Painted just after entering St. Paul

The Getty places the execution the day after Van Gogh's voluntary admission. Doctor Peyron had allowed him to work in the garden.

Research

An in-depth scientific study

3D imaging, X-ray fluorescence, spectroscopy and microsampling made it possible to map the pigments and reconstruct the initial purple appearance of the flowers.

Japan

Framing inspired by prints

The plants cut by the edges, the close-up viewpoint and the absence of horizon recall the Japanese compositions that Van Gogh collected.

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the dark blue outlines, purple shades, isolated white iris, turquoise leaves and red earth band.

  • The white iris placed on the left
  • The purple and indigo blue petals
  • The leaves surrounded by blue
  • The contrast of orange-red earth
