À propos de l’œuvre

La nouvelle église et les vieilles maisons de La Haye, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · August 1882 · The Hague, Netherlands

Old houses and New Church, F204Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Tight houses occupy the foreground while the green spire of the Nieuwe Kerk emerges above the roofs. Van Gogh confronts the ordinary architecture of the old quarter with the recognizable silhouette of the church.

Look at the work

A green spire above the roofs of The Hague

The ocher yellow facades are seen up close, cut by the lower edge. Their gables, fireplaces and red-brown roofs overlap and form a very dense urban line.

In the center, the green roof then the bell tower of the New Church rise into a gray pink sky. The precision of the contours decreases with height, as if the city were dissolving in the mist.

Old Houses and New Church of The Hague F204/JH190 is an oil on canvas mounted on 34 × 25 cm cardboard painted in August 1882. It is kept in a private collection in the United States.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The small vertical format stacks three levels: the facades, the roofs then the bell tower. The warm ochres of the old quarter are balanced by the cold green of the church and the roses of the sky.

01

The houses form a compact base

The framing cuts their base and brings the viewer closer to the walls. Uneven gables and chimneys prevent this strip from becoming strictly horizontal.

02

The bell tower organizes the central axis

The slender spire extends the green roof of the church and immediately catches the eye. Its verticality contrasts with the long lines of the roofs.

03

The mist simplifies volumes

Van Gogh uses thin passages of pink, ocher and gray. The details fade away in favor of a bright and slightly veiled atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F204/JH190 is sometimes called Cluster of Old Houses with the New Church in The Hague. The dimensions, support and date of August 1882 make it possible to distinguish it from the drawings and watercolors dedicated to the same district.

Monument

The Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague

Completed in the 17th century, the New Church can be recognized by its roof and its spire. Van Gogh shows it from a distance, behind modest houses.

Support

A canvas fixed on cardboard

The catalog describes an oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. This rigid support corresponds to the material experiments of the first paintings in The Hague.

Period

The summer of 1882 in The Hague

Van Gogh then painted streets, dunes, the beach and people at work. This urban view complements the rural and maritime subjects produced in the same month.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must respect the ocher facades, the red-brown roofs, the irregular chimneys, the green roof of the church and the spire which is lost in the gray pink sky.

  • The cut facades in the foreground
  • The succession of gables and chimneys
  • The green roof of the New Church
  • The vertical arrow in the center
  • The slightly foggy ocher pink sky
