Claude Monet · A bouquet acquired by Doctor Gachet in 1878 · Musée d'Orsay
A bouquet of white and pink chrysanthemums overflows from a red vase placed on a striped textile. The flowers barely stand out from the wallpaper dotted with small branches, because Monet circulates the same cream, pink, green and brown tones between the real pattern and the decor. Still life thus becomes a dense surface where the vase stabilizes a profusion of supple touches.

Look at the work
The red vase occupies the lower center and forms a stable, almost cylindrical mass. Stems escape in several directions; the lighter flowers gather on the left and at the top, while denser roses concentrate on the right. A few dark leaves are inserted between the corollas.
The beige background is punctuated with small blue-gray and red plant motifs. Below the vase, a fabric or rug receives diagonal bands and colored accents which prolong the movement of the bouquet. The table is therefore not a simple support: its obliques respond to the stems and prevent the composition from becoming symmetrical.
Flowers, wallpaper and textile share the same touch; only the red vase brings together this profusion around a solid center.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The bouquet widens above the vase but neither side repeats the other. White flowers open the shape, roses densify it and dark leaves create hollows.
The vase offers the most saturated area. Its color reappears in smaller touches in chrysanthemums, wallpaper and textiles, which connects the center to the perimeter.
Each flower is born from short cream, pink or light brown gestures. The contours remain open; the density and direction of the keys are enough to differentiate the volumes.
Reference image
The single reference corresponds to the RF 1951 36 inventory of the Musée d'Orsay. The public domain file measures 2,536 × 2,081 px; it is kept at its native definition, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP.
Its simple shape balances the stems which open in all directions. The clear reflection on its surface should remain more discreet than the flowers.
Light chrysanthemums mix cream, pale pink, gray and small brown shadows. This variety gives their volume without suddenly isolating them from the background.
Corollas, wallpaper and textiles are treated with visible touches, but their scale changes. The flowers remain round, the wall patterns small and the support strips wider.
Documented benchmarks
The Musée d'Orsay preserves this oil on canvas measuring 54.3 × 65.2 cm under the inventory RF 1951 36; it is identified as Wildenstein 492.
The signature "Claude Monet" appears at the bottom left and the date 1878 at the bottom right. These two inscriptions frame the base of the bouquet without breaking the decor.
Paul Gachet acquired the still life directly from the artist in December 1878. She then stayed with her son, also named Paul, until 1951.
Paul Gachet fils offers the painting to the State for the National Museums. After the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume, the work was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Presentation in your interior
Its earthy reds, powder roses and cream background warm a dining room, living room or bedroom. A dark wood, patinated gold or red-brown frame takes up the vase and lets the flowers breathe.
