Femme dans un jardin, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June-July 1887 · Clichy, near Paris
Woman walking in a garden, F368Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A woman in a light dress advances in a high meadow, almost absorbed by green stems and red flowers. Behind her, a curtain of blue, yellow and turquoise trees barely reveals the buildings of Clichy.
Look at the work
The figure stands out from the garden without ever leaving its colorful framework
The woman is placed slightly to the left of the center, her bust light above the grass and her skirt crossed with long pink and green touches. Her yellow hat takes up the luminous foliage at the top.
The foreground has no path or bare ground. Hundreds of vertical lines build the meadow, interrupted by red flowers, yellow leaves and a few blue lines that extend the trees.
Painted in Clichy in June-July 1887, this Woman walking in an oil garden on canvas measures 48 × 60 cm. It is referenced F368/JH1262 and belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh experiments here with a much lighter color than in his Dutch works. The short touches are juxtaposed, but their direction still follows precisely the grasses, leaves, trunks and folds of the dress.
The meadow occupies the entire foreground
The stems rise to the woman's waist and remove any clear separation between the figure and the landscape.
The white of the dress is multi-colored
Pink, blue, green and yellow run through the garment; these touches reflect the garden and prevent the silhouette from appearing cut out on the background.
The red edges announce a set
Thin red bands remain visible on the canvas: they were used to connect this painting to the two landscapes intended to form the Clichy triptych.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Research brought together by the Van Gogh Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago has placed the work at the center of a triptych devoted to the green banks of Clichy.
The figure in the center of three landscapes
Van Gogh combines this painting with La Pêche in spring F354 and Rive de rivière in spring, creating a whole dominated by light greens.
A woman treated with unusual care
Van Gogh often depicts very small figures in his landscapes. Here, the walker is large enough for her dress, hat and posture to be individualized.
A work rarely visible
Sold in 2005 then kept in a private collection, the painting was exceptionally combined with its two counterparts during the 2023 exhibitions.
