Naked woman lying on a bed, F330Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Lying diagonally on a white bed, a woman rests her arms behind her head and keeps her stockings light. The oval format, the striated blue wall and the material of the bedspread transform this rare nude study into a very constructed composition.

Look at the work

A diagonal body in an oval frame

The head and arms occupy the upper right corner, while the crossed legs join the lower left. This diagonal stretches the figure without disrupting the balance of the oval format.

The body is surrounded by surfaces with different touches: vertical lines of the wall, small hatching of the skin and long clear strokes of the bedspread which follow the volume of the mattress.

Painted in Paris between January and March 1887, this oil on oval canvas measuring 59.7 × 73.7 cm is F330/JH1214. It is kept at the Barnes Foundation under number BF720.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh combines a traditional pose of a reclining nude and deliberately direct details. The figure is neither idealized nor smoothed: its modeling is born from clearly visible pink, green, blue and ocher touches.

01

The diagonal animates the oval

The body crosses the bed from one edge to the other and connects the raised arms to the legs sheathed at the bottom, avoiding any decorative immobility.

02

Cool colors shape the skin

Blues and greens appear in the shadows of the torso and legs, opposite the pinks and ochres of the lit areas.

03

The bed becomes a painting surface

The white bedspread is covered with yellow, blue and gray lines which give the textile its thickness and surround the figure with a vibrant material.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Barnes Foundation dates the work from January to March 1887 and specifies its oval format. She recalls that Van Gogh painted very few nudes, in particular because he rarely had the money necessary to hire models.

Rarity

One of the few nudes painted by Van Gogh

The subject occupies an unusual place in his work, much more abundant in portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

Look

A deliberately non-idealized beauty

The pose and closed eyes evoke the academic nude, but the visible hairiness and frank features set aside the elegant conventions of the 19th century.

  • Arms raised
  • The diagonal of the body
  • Light blue stockings

A rare nude with powder blues

The oval shape softens the subject's presence in a room or private space. Gray blue, ivory, earth pink and muted orange create a subtle harmony.
