À propos de l’œuvre

La vie avec des fleurs et des fruits, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A still life by Bougival in 1869 · J. Paul Getty Museum

Flowers and fruits W139hand painted reproduction

A bouquet overflows from a decorated vase, surrounded by a basket, apples, pears and bunches of grapes. On the white tablecloth, each fruit receives a different light. Monet composes a very structured abundance and experiments with several ways of applying paint depending on the material represented.

Look at the work

The bouquet dominates a table organized by fruit

The vase occupies the central axis and carries an asymmetrical bouquet which extends strongly to the left. White, red, pink, yellow and blue flowers fit together without merging. A large dark area around the bouquet reinforces their shine.

On the table, the basket tilts slightly towards the viewer and releases several fruits. Apples, pears and grapes are distributed on either side of the vase. The folds of the tablecloth lead the eye towards the bottom while connecting the scattered objects.

This still life is not based on a uniform finish: Monet changes touch to differentiate tablecloth, fruit, ceramic and petals.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately asymmetrical bouquet

The floral mass widens on the left while a few stems stretch to the right. The central vase stabilizes this irregular balance.

02

A table tilted towards the viewer

The tablecloth largely reveals its design and brings the fruits closer to the edge. Its perspective gives depth to the large vertical format.

03

Keys adapted to each material

The Getty distinguishes a broad and flat painting in the tablecloth, more sketched in the apples and short, tight, in the petals.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to inventory 83.PA.215 of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Wildenstein version 139. The Open Content file was reduced without enlargement to 2,433 × 3,000 px then encoded in WebP.

Composition01

The whites change depending on the material

Petals and tablecloth do not share the same white: the flowers are thicker and more colorful, the fabric wider and bluish gray.

Color02

The vase remains partially hidden

The bouquet and fruits pass in front of its shape. Its blue patterns must be readable without attracting the eye more than the flowers.

Matter03

The fruits bear similar reflections

Greens, reds and yellows change on contact with the tablecloth, the vase and the shadows. No fruit is treated as an isolated local color.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1869, this oil on canvas measuring 100.3 × 81.3 cm is kept at the J. Paul Getty Museum under inventory 83.PA.215 and classified Wildenstein 139.

Atelier01

A still life painted in Bougival

Monet produced the composition in a workshop during his stay in the summer and autumn of 1869 in Bougival, where he also carried out his outdoor research on the Seine.

Experience02

Light changes color and outline

The objects retain their presence, but their limits are softened and their colors affected by reflections. This research contributes to innovations that will nourish impressionism.

Signature03

Signed top right

The Claude Monet signature appears in the dark area above the bouquet. The painting belongs to the Getty under the reference 83.PA.215.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the asymmetrical extension of the bouquet to the left.
  • Differentiate the touch of the petals, fruits and tablecloth.
  • Keep the blue patterns of the vase without over-emphasizing them.
  • Maintain the depth of shadows behind the flowers.
