A village seen as a tapestry of roofs

A large dark thatched roof fills the entire left edge. In the center, a white house with a red roof and a blue facade stand out between the gardens. Higher up, other roofs overlap under two plumes of clear smoke.

A yellow path descends towards the foreground, bordered by a blue-gray wall and a small red figure. The trees and fields of the distance are compressed against a turquoise sky covered with long curved touches.

The plunging view transforms the houses of Auvers into colorful patchwork, almost without separation between architecture and vegetation.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Version 48.549 of the Museum of Fine Arts can be recognized by its vertical orientation, the large dark cottage on the left, the yellow path and the small red figure.

The gaze dominates the houses, but the planes overlap more than they recede. Roofs become interlocking colored surfaces.
