Look at the work

The exceptionally narrow format transforms the bouquet into an ascending column

The gladioli are grouped in a bundle and rise almost parallel. A few stems diverge on the left, but the whole retains a stricter verticality than the other bouquets in this series.

The light carnations form a second zone, lower and more diffuse. They partially cover the vase whose cylindrical shape, the foot and the handle are constructed by yellow ochres.

Vase with gladioli and carnations F242/JH1147 is an oil on canvas of 78.5 × 40.5 cm painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The work belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh uses a format here almost twice as high as it is wide. He stretches the gladioli, superimposes two families of flowers and uses the vase as an architectural base.

01

The bouquet is divided into two registers

Red gladioli dominate in height; cream and brown carnations accumulate in the center and around the collar. This separation keeps the large format readable.

02

The stems extend the contours of the vase

The main verticals are born in the cylinder and continue to the upper edge. The container and the bouquet seem to share the same axis.

03

Warm colors cover almost the entire canvas

Red, orange, brown and ocher pass from the petals to the bottom then to the table. The little green touches act as essential breaks.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F242/JH1147 and the format of 78.5 × 40.5 cm distinguish this large vertical bouquet from the gladioli F237, F247 and F248.

Format

The canvas is almost twice as tall as it is wide

This unusual proportion is suitable for long stems and allows the entire vase to be preserved without shortening flower growth.

Collection

The work remains in private collection

The catalogs raisonnés identify it by F242 and JH1147; these benchmarks are essential because several paintings bear very similar French titles.

Color

The carnations soften the dominant red

Their creams, brown and yellow roses form a transition between saturated gladioli and vase ocher.

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the very vertical format, the red gladioli, the cream carnations, the beige vase, the parallel stems, the handle and the red-brown background.

  • The red poles grouped in the upper part
  • The little cream flowers around the center
  • The stem that deviates to the left
  • The cylindrical beige vase and its base
  • Warm continuity from the bottom to the table
