Vase avec glaïeuls et lilas, par Vincent van Gogh

Vase with gladioli and lilacs, F286aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A very high bouquet combines orange-red gladioli, white and pink lilacs and a large pale flower above a blue and white earthenware vase. The stems diverge into a black green background, transforming the narrow format into a vertical thrust.

Look at the work

Flowers of different shapes build an inverted pyramid

The small round vase takes up very little space at the bottom of the canvas. From its neck, leaves and stems widen rapidly; the clusters of lilacs close the sides, while the gladioli rise in the center and right.

The large pink flower tilted to the left creates a stop in the middle of the bouquet. Around it, smaller inflorescences form clear clouds, then tall red stems look back towards the summit.

Vase with gladioli and lilacs F286a/JH1128 is an oil on canvas of 69 × 33.5 cm painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The work is kept in a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting compares several plant textures: large petals, compact clusters, vertical spikes and long leaves. The blue and white vase brings a cold and decorated surface to this diversity.

01

Bouquet widens above very small vase

The narrow base accentuates the impression of abundance. Stems and leaves cross at the neck, then the flowers occupy almost the entire available width.

02

The gladioli give the upward movement

Their orange-red stems stand out in the dark upper part. They extend the construction well above the round clusters of lilacs.

03

The blue and white earthenware cools the lower part

Small blue marks animate the light vase. This cold contrast balances the roses and yellows of the bouquet without competing with its material.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F286a/JH1128, the exceptionally narrow 69 × 33.5 cm format and the former Edwin McClellan Johnston collection constitute the main known documentary landmarks.

Format

The height is more than double the width

This proportion naturally accommodates gladiolus stalks. Van Gogh transforms constraint into an ascending, almost architectural composition.

Color

Parisian bouquets serve to broaden its palette

Roses, reds, yellows and whites are tried against a dark green background. Flowers become exercises in chromatic relationships as much as subjects.

Provenance

The work belonged to Edwin McClellan Johnston

Documentary sources once place it in this collection in Ballwin, Missouri; its current owner is not published.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the very narrow format, the ascending gladioli, the clusters of lilacs, the large central pink flower, the dark leaves and the small blue patterns of the earthenware.

  • The three long orange-red poles at the top
  • The white and yellow clusters that close the right side
  • The large pink flower tilted to the left
  • The large green leaves around the collar
  • The round blue and white vase placed at the bottom of the format
