À propos de l’œuvre

Vase avec pivoines, par Vincent van Gogh

Attributed to Vincent van Gogh · Traditionally dated summer 1886 · Paris according to the traditional classification

Vase with peonies, F666aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Six large white and pink peonies group together above a light vase on a red-brown table. The canvas is traditionally cataloged F666a/JH1107 as Van Gogh, but its signature, inscribed date, and attribution have been questioned by research by the Van Gogh Museum.

Look at the work

A spectacular bouquet whose status must remain transparent

The peonies stack into a vertical mass: three large flowers occupy the center, two close the group on the left and a last one leans over the vase. Their red hearts pierce very thick cream petals.

The green background is divided between a lighter area on the left and an almost black passage on the right. The white vase, the red table and the flowers thus construct three bands of strongly contrasting color.

Vase with peonies is traditionally given as a Parisian oil on canvas from the summer of 1886, referenced F666a/JH1107 and kept in a private collection. The Van Gogh Museum Journal, however, indicated that its attribution awaited clarification.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Visual analysis remains useful, but it should not erase the documentary question. The composition combines thick floral material, red-green contrasts and a dated signature that does not match the traditional classification.

01

The flowers are organized like a pile of volumes

Each peony is turned differently and partly covers the next one. The red centers create markers in the middle of the masses of white and pink.

02

Red and green form the main opposition

The red-brown table contrasts with the large green background, while the light flowers serve as a transition zone. This structure makes the bouquet immediately decorative.

03

The visible signature is part of the attribution file

The inscription at the bottom left appears to include the name Vincent and the year 1889. A publication in the Van Gogh Museum describes it as dubious and highlights the discrepancy with the proposed Parisian dating.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F666a/JH1107 are catalog references, not definitive proof of author. The sheet therefore presents the work as attributed to Van Gogh and sets out the published elements which make this status uncertain.

Catalog

Tradition places the canvas in Paris during the summer of 1886

The floral subject and references F666a/JH1107 linked it to the color research carried out by Van Gogh during his first year in Paris.

Reserve

The signature and the date 1889 are considered problematic

The Van Gogh Museum Journal 2002 notes a dubious signature and a year which does not correspond to the traditional attribution in Paris in 1886.

Status

The published research still calls for clarification

In the absence of an institutional notice lifting these reservations, the author should not be presented here as definitively established.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the stacking of the six peonies, the cream petals bordered with pink, the red centers, the light vase, the red-brown table and the two values of the green background.

  • The six peonies arranged at different heights
  • Orange-red hearts in the middle of the light petals
  • The large, brighter green area on the left
  • The rounded white vase at the bottom of the bouquet
  • The inscription visible in the lower left corner
