Coings, citrons, poires et raisins, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September -October 1887 · Paris

Quinces, lemons, pears and grapes, F383Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Quinces, lemons, pears and bunches gather in an almost entirely yellow light; Van Gogh demonstrates here that a tight range can produce a vibrant and deeply colorful still life.

Look at the work

An abundance of fruit in a yellow world

Large fruits occupy the foreground, some cut by the edge of the canvas. Two clusters rise towards the center and break the succession of round shapes with their small light berries.

Table, background and fruits share neighboring yellows. Touches of green, blue, red and pink appear only in shadows, contours and reflections, giving relief without breaking the unity.

In Paris, Van Gogh understands that he must abandon the dark colors of his Dutch period. This almost monochrome study affirms his new mastery of luminous chords even before the famous yellows of Arles.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum identifies this painting under s0023V1962, with the references F383/JH1339 and the dimensions of 48.9 × 65.5 cm.

01

Yellow declined rather than repeated

Ocher, lemon, yellow-green and golden beige follow one another in the fruits and the background. Temperature differences build volumes.

02

A rhythm of round shapes

Quinces, lemons and pears form an irregular frieze, interrupted by the clusters and curved stems which animate the composition.

03

Keys in all directions

The brush sometimes follows the curve of the fruits, sometimes the diagonal of the table or the arcs of the bottom, transforming the surface into continuous movement.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice specifies that Van Gogh tested his pairings with woolen threads and that he also painted the frame of this work.

Frame

The unique original frame preserved

The frame painted by Van Gogh survived with the canvas, an exceptional case in all of his work.

Dedication

A painting intended for Theo

Van Gogh dedicated this still life to his brother, who had often encouraged him to introduce more color.

Color

Tests with wool threads

Before painting, the artist juxtaposed colored threads in order to quickly observe the effect of different combinations.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the many distinct yellows, the small complementary accents and the swirling material of the background, without transforming the whole into a uniform shade.

  • The massive quinces in the foreground
  • Bunches of light grapes
  • Pears with curved stems
  • Green and red accents
  • The long touches of the yellow background
