À propos de l’œuvre
Moulin à eau de Gennep, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 · Gennep near Eindhoven, Netherlands
Wheels from the Gennep water mill, F46Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two large wheels and their framework occupy the entire facade of the Gennep mill. Van Gogh stands near the water and transforms the blades, beams, walkways and plank walls into a dense network of brown, ocher and green.
Look at the work
The mechanics of the mill observed as closely as possible
The left wheel, seen almost frontally, clearly shows its spokes and buckets. On the right, a second wheel is partly hidden by the walkways and by a more irregular wooden structure.
The building closes almost the entire background. Only an area of pale yellow sky opens to the right, behind posts and ropes, while the dark water reflects some light features in the foreground.
Wheels of the Gennep water mill F46/JH524 is an oil on canvas painted in November 1884. Property of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed under number AB9414, it is on long-term loan to the Noordbrabants Museum, inventory 12680.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work is not a picturesque view of the site but a close study of its operation. Van Gogh assembles the pieces of wood with angular, repeated strokes, then uses yellow light to detach the machine.
The left wheel sets the pace
Its radiant rays create the only large circular shape. The dark blades interrupt the circle and make visible the weight of this water-operated mechanism.
Frame fills space
Beams, guardrails and uprights intersect on several planes. Their density reflects the empirical construction of the mill and gives the facade an almost graphic energy.
The yellow sky lights up the right
This light gap contrasts with the green-brown wood. It allows you to read the finest posts and gives depth to a composition dominated by the facade.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Numbers F46/JH524 and AB9414 identify this view of the wheels, distinct from the large F125 landscape preserved at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Three oils and a watercolor
Van Gogh devoted several studies to the Gennep mill in November 1884. Each version changes the point of view and the importance given to wheels or the building.
A mill on the Dommel
The mill is located in Gennep, now a district of Eindhoven, and not in the homonymous town of Limburg. The historic site still exists.
A national loan in 's-Hertogenbosch
The painting belongs to the Dutch state collection and is deposited at the Noordbrabants Museum, where it joins an ensemble dedicated to Van Gogh's Brabant years.
