Look at the work

The bouquet rises like a column of color above the green bowl

The large orange corollas organize a curve from the top left to the center right. Yellow flowers and small light spots fill the intervals, while leaves cut out the bottom with their tips.

The bowl, wide and rounded, stabilizes this vertical thrust. Its light green responds to the foliage, but its more continuous outline and the wide table band clearly separate it from the bouquet.

Bowl with zinnias F252/JH1140 is a 59.7 × 45.1 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The Kreeger Museum in Washington preserves it under the 1972.7 inventory.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum links this still life to Van Gogh's intensive study of color in the summer of 1886 and his admiration for Adolphe Monticelli, whose impasto and red accords nourish the material here.

01

Flowers move from form to matter

Some corollas are described petal by petal; others become clumps of orange or yellow paint. This alternation avoids a uniform botanical inventory.

02

Red-brown works as an active color

The background is not neutral: its warm streaks appear between each stem and intensify the greens by complementary contrast.

03

The key varies depending on each element

It is round and thick in the flowers, more nervous in the leaves, horizontal on the table and curved on the bowl. The surface thus keeps several simultaneous rhythms.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Kreeger Museum's instructions associate F252/JH1140 with the 1972.7 inventory and the format of 23 1/2 × 17 3/4 inches, or approximately 59.7 × 45.1 cm.

Paris

Flowers become a laboratory of color

During the summer of 1886, Van Gogh painted numerous floral arrangements to escape the dark tones of his Dutch period.

Monticelli

The material pays homage to the Marseille painter

Van Gogh admires Adolphe Monticelli's bouquets. After his death in the summer of 1886, he resumed their impasto and sustained red chords.

Museum

The painting is presented in the permanent collection

The Kreeger Museum keeps the work in Washington and lists it as on display in its presentation of European paintings.

  • Green leaves cut into points
  • The rounded outline of the green bowl
  • The horizontal streaks of the ocher table
