Femme soulevant des pommes de terre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · August 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Woman lifting potatoes, F147Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Curved above a field, a peasant woman pushes a long fork into the ground to raise the potatoes. Its dark body, the basket placed on the left and the low horizon give full scope to the work gesture.

Look at the work

The body and fork make up a single diagonal above the furrow

The handle starts with the hands close together and goes down towards the lower right corner. The peasant girl leans in the same direction, while her skirt and legs form a stable mass against the effort.

The filled basket on the left balances the large plowed space. Behind her, the strips of vegetation and the cloudy sky remain very simple: nothing distracts the eye from the gesture and the turned over earth.

Woman Raising Potatoes F147/JH891 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel measuring 41.8 × 32.5 cm, painted in Nuenen in August 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under inventory s0452S1995.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

After his studies as a farmer around the Potato Eaters, Van Gogh continued a cycle devoted to agricultural work in the open air. He transforms a familiar motif of rural painting into a compact image, constructed by movement.

01

Figure's folded around tool

Head, back, arms and sleeve form a continuous sequence. The posture appears heavy because each segment of the body accompanies the pressure exerted on the fork.

02

The earth is painted as an active material

Brown, ocher, green and light touches overlap in short strokes. The soil is not a uniform bottom: it bears furrows, tubers and traces of work.

03

Sky opens scene without softening it

The band of bluish-gray clouds brings air, but remains low and dense. It detaches the peasant's cap and shoulders without creating a picturesque effect.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F147/JH891, s0452S1995 and the 41.8 × 32.5 cm format identify this harvest scene from the Van Gogh Museum.

Series

Van Gogh is preparing a harvest "campaign"

At the end of June 1885, he announced to Theo his intention to paint the harvest and potato work as soon as the fields were ready.

Pattern

The fork is used to lift the tubers

The farmer doesn't just dig the ground: she raises the plants with a long-toothed tool, then gathers the potatoes in the next basket.

Influences

The subject belongs to a Dutch rural tradition

Van Gogh knows the field worker scenes of Anton Mauve and David Adolph Constant Artz, but here he accentuates the physical tension of the pose.

  • The lower basket placed on the left
  • The small light chips of the potatoes
  • The green and brown bands of the field on the horizon
