À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte au bouquet de marguerites, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · 1885 -1886 · Paris
Bouquet of daisies, F197Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
White and yellow daisies overflow from a striped vase placed in front of a deep green background. The flowers do not form a regular bouquet: they disperse horizontally, rise to the right and fall towards the left edge.
Look at the work
The bouquet spreads like a plant mass larger than the vase
A large yellow flower catches the eye in the left half, while a group of white daisies rises to the right. Between the two, blue and red flowers thicken the central mass.
The striped vase remains low and dark. The green background and table are treated in close values, allowing light petals and yellow accents to form most of the depth.
Bouquet of daisies F197/JH1167 is a 41.6 × 57.2 cm oil on canvas kept at the Philadelphia Museum of Art under inventory 1978-1-33. The museum notice dates from 1885.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The canvas is based on a range of greens, awakened by white, yellow, blue and some reds. The thick touches give the flowers a tactile presence.
The general shape is asymmetrical
The bouquet goes down to the left and up to the right. This diagonal prevents the central vase from making the composition static.
Petals are units of light
Each daisy is constructed by short lines around a yellow heart. Their repetition animates dark areas without completely covering them.
The vase shares the same greens as the bottom
Its light and dark bands are enough to make you feel the volume. It remains discreet to let the flowers take on full width.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
References F197/JH1167, the 41.6 × 57.2 cm format and inventory 1978-1-33 precisely identify the Philadelphia work.
A legacy entered in 1978
The painting belongs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art thanks to the bequest of Charlotte Dorrance Wright and bears inventory 1978-1-33.
A date presented with caution
The museum's current notice indicates 1885, while several catalogs link the work to Parisian floral research from 1886.
Flowers serve as a chromatic exercise
Whites, yellows, blues and reds allow Van Gogh to study brighter chords than those of his Dutch still lifes.
