Still life with potatoes, F386Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

A rustic subject becomes an experience of color and material

The dish is seen slightly from above, close enough that the potatoes form an irregular mass. The yellow edge, the blue-purple contours and the almost white tablecloth organize three clearly readable areas.

The table is constructed by small impasto horizontal touches. Behind it, wider brushstrokes change direction and compose a braided background that seeks neither precise wall nor illusionistic depth.

Still life with potatoes is an oil on canvas measuring 39.5 × 47.5 cm dated mid-January 1889 in Arles. Referenced F386/JH1365, it is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 108.951.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The instructions from the Kroeller-Müller Museum emphasize two essential choices: colors freed from realism and a touch that becomes as important as objects. Van Gogh uses the familiar potato motif to test these new solutions.

01

Yellow and blue replace traditional modeling

The yellow dish casts a blue shadow instead of a neutral gray. This opposition of complements strongly detaches the container from the tablecloth without resorting to academic chiaroscuro.

02

Potatoes are never just brown

Red, ocher, blue and green mingle in their skins. The colored touches give each tuber a rough surface and its own orientation.

03

The background adopts a so-called "varnery" touch

Vertical and horizontal lines intersect like fibers. This visible network transforms the background into an active surface rather than an erased decoration.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The dimensions 39.5 × 47.5 cm, the KM 108.951 inventory and the references F386/JH1365 identify this composition with the yellow dish among Van Gogh's numerous still lifes of potatoes.

Dating

A work now set in mid-January 1889

The museum adopts this dating for a canvas long close to the first studies of Arles. The sheet follows the current institutional notice.

Back

A motif linked to research from the Dutch period

Van Gogh had studied baskets, dishes and potato meals in Nuenen. Here he takes up this humble subject with the clear palette and autonomous touch developed in France.

Technique

The material of the brush structures each area

Tight touches on the table, wider lines in the background and curved accents on the tubers differentiate the surfaces without smoothing them.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the yellow dish, the potatoes with red and blue accents, the blue shade, the light tablecloth and the very visible changes of direction in the background.

  • The yellow dish highlighted with purple-blue
  • Brown potatoes crossed with red and blue
  • Blue shadow on the tablecloth
  • The small horizontal touches of the table
  • The background with crossed brushstrokes
