Nature morte à la statuette de plâtre et aux deux romans, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · End of 1887 · Paris

Still life with statuette, F360Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A plaster torso of Venus stands behind two brightly colored novels and a faded rose; Van Gogh brings together academic learning, naturalistic literature and an ambiguous flower in this still life.

Look at the work

A Venus, two novels and a rose

The gray statuette occupies the vertical axis, in front of a background divided between yellow and dark blue. In the foreground, the books Germinie Lacerteux and Bel-Ami intersect on a light fabric.

On the left, a pink-brown rose and its green leaves introduce a living pattern among the plaster and printed objects. The diagonals of the fabric and covers tilt the composition towards the viewer.

The Kroeller-Müller Museum dates the painting to the end of 1887. The museum perhaps sees it as a farewell greeting to Paris and Theo: the statuette recalls the lessons of Ferdinand Cormon, while the novels belong to the readings regularly cited by Van Gogh.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

KM number 105.676, dimensions of 55 × 46 cm and references F360/JH1349 identify this still life preserved in Otterlo.

01

A background in two colors

Bright yellow and almost black blue divide the space behind the statuette. This opposition amplifies the relief of the plaster without traditional academic modeling.

02

Objects that respond to each other

The verticality of the torso contrasts with the reclining novels and the drooping petals. Each element embodies a different way of representing the body and life.

03

The Parisian touch

The tight hatching and bold colors bear witness to Van Gogh's transformation through contact with the Parisian avant-garde.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The readable titles on the covers make the identification of books particularly precise.

Novel

Germinie Lacerteux

The Goncourt brothers' novel recounts the tragic double life of a servant; Van Gogh admired him as an example of modern life described without idealization.

Novel

Bel-Friend

The Blue Book is Guy de Maupassant's novel dedicated to the rise of an ambitious man who uses his charm and his connections.

Atelier

The torso of Venus

Van Gogh had already drawn and painted this type of plaster casting during his classes in Ferdinand Cormon's studio.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the cover inscriptions, the streaked material of the plaster and the balance between lemon yellow, deep blue, green and faded pink.

  • The gray-green torso of Venus
  • The yellow cover by Germinie Lacerteux
  • The Bel-Ami blue book
  • The faded rose in the foreground
  • The diagonal separation of the yellow and blue background
