Look at the work

A famous composition whose original has disappeared

Two flowers still standing dominate the vase, while several heavy or faded heads descend towards the table. The shapes are distributed in cascade: a large flower seen from the front on the left, an almost round disc in the center and flower heads lying in the foreground.

The blue background, the green vase and the purple table form three free zones. Van Gogh contrasts these colors with the yellows and oranges of the petals. The painting was then enlarged and mounted on wood; a sixth button would then have been added at the bottom of the composition.

F459 belongs to the first vase sunflower canvases painted for the Yellow House. The work burned down in Ashiya, Japan on August 6, 1945, along with the house of its owner Koyata Yamamoto.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

As the original is destroyed, the composition is documented by Van Gogh's letters, catalogs and photographs prior to 1945; the colors published today remain restitutions.

01

A gradual fall

The flowers move from vertical to horizontal and lead the gaze from the top right to the flower head placed on the table.

02

Blue versus yellow

The royal background gives the petals an intensity that later versions, often dominated by yellow, do not use in the same way.

03

A materially modified work

The current format of 98 × 69 cm results from an enlargement and assembly on wood which took place after the first design of the canvas.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F459/JH1560 identify this lost work, distinct from the twelve and fifteen sunflower versions preserved in London, Munich, Amsterdam, Philadelphia and Tokyo.

Letter

Five flowers described

Van Gogh evokes three flowers, a head set in seeds without petals and a bud on a royal blue background.

Provenance

The Yamamoto Collection

The painting was at Japanese industrialist Koyata Yamamoto's home in Ashiya when his house was destroyed during an air raid.

Loss

August 6, 1945

The original burned with the house. Any current reproduction therefore depends on photographic documents and chromatic interpretations.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must respect the historical composition and the blue-yellow contrast, while recognizing that the color cannot be directly compared to a missing original.

  • The royal blue background
  • The green vase with orange contours
  • The two flowers still standing
  • The faded flower heads lying on the table
  • The diagonal waterfall from top to bottom
