À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte au chou et aux sabots, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of November - mid-December 1881 · The Hague, Netherlands
Still life with cabbage and clogs, F1Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
White cabbage, potatoes and two clogs are placed on a wooden table. Painted during Van Gogh's first oil lessons with Anton Mauve, this study compares matte materials, light surfaces and ordinary objects.
Look at the work
A light cabbage between potatoes and clogs
The cabbage occupies the center with its widely spread cream leaves. Five potatoes form an irregular line in the foreground; the two hooves close the composition at the bottom.
A blue-green fabric folds under the right hoof, while a dark red fabric appears behind the cabbage. These two cold and warm accents liven up a range dominated by browns.
Still life with cabbage and clogs F1/JH81 is an oil on paper mounted on a 34 × 55 cm panel, painted in The Hague between the end of November and mid-December 1881. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0137V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work belongs to Van Gogh's first oil exercises. Mauve chooses objects with opposite textures to make him work on volume, light and color.
Cabbage forms the light center
Its pleated leaves are shaped into cream, yellow and gray. Their complex shape contrasts with the simple volumes of the tubers.
Clogs frame the scene
The light hoof at the bottom and the darker one on the right form a diagonal which leads the gaze behind the cabbage.
The boards build depth
The table joins converge towards the bottom and give the whole thing a firm perspective despite the very simple layout.
