Look at the work

A carefully composed-looking winter still life

Van Gogh painted this canvas shortly after his release from Arles hospital. Oranges and lemons are arranged in a low basket, their round shapes contrasting with the dry interlacing of the wicker and the needles of the dark branches placed behind.

Garden gloves occupy the lower right corner and introduce an intense blue among the yellows and greens. Their crumpled flexibility responds to firm fruits and a rigid basket. The red inscription in the corner clearly associates the place and year with the signature.

The composition seems natural, but each material has its own language: grainy skin, linear wicker, prickly needles and soft glove fabric.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

F502 is based on oppositions of texture and color that reproduction must maintain without standardizing the touch.

01

Nine different fruits

Oranges and lemons vary in size, color and outline. Blue and green lines reinforce several of their volumes.

02

A pair of gloves

The cobalt of the gloves is the main cold accent. Their folds and three brown bands suggest an object already in use.

03

Cypress branches

Dark branches extend behind the basket like a screen. Their elongated hands contrast with all round shapes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F502/JH1664, inventory 2014.18.13 and the signature "Vincent Arles 89" precisely identify Washington's work.

Context

After hospital

Van Gogh returned to work in January 1889 and chose several still lifes to return to a regular painting rhythm.

Intention

An "air of chic"

In a letter to Theo, the artist associates this composition with more elegant research, probably linked to the hope of selling his works.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must differentiate between fruit, wicker, needles and fabric, while maintaining the balance between warm yellows and cobalt blue.

  • The nine citrus fruits with irregular contours
  • The blue and brown braiding of the basket
  • Cypress branches placed in a fan shape
  • The folds and bands of the cobalt blue gloves
  • The red signature "Vincent Arles 89"
