Look at the work

The gladiolus stalks open an irregular sheaf above the black vase

The central stem rises almost to the upper edge, then the side branches spread apart to different heights. The flowers do not form a compact mass: each corolla advances through a broken outline.

The low, dark vase acts as a counterweight. Its green and white reflections are rare, but they are enough to separate the container from the red ocher table and bring the bouquet towards the center.

Still life: gladioli vase F248/JH1146 is an oil on canvas painted in Paris in August - September 1886. Measured at 51.2 × 38.8 cm during its Sotheby's sale in 2021, it belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh painted this still life a few months after his arrival in Paris. Red dominates the background and the flowers, but it is constantly revived by the greens of the stems and the yellow touches of the petals.

01

The fan is constructed in opposite directions

One pole leans to the left, two rise to the center and a shorter branch deviates to the right. Their asymmetry gives the bouquet spontaneous growth.

02

Red changes function depending on the area

It becomes dark and deep in the background, almost brown on the table, then orange and bright on the petals. A single colored family thus produces several planes.

03

The vase is deliberately not very detailed

A few green and gray impastos indicate its neck, its cylinder and its reflection. This economy reinforces the graphic vigor of the long stems.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F248/JH1146 and the measured format of 51.2 × 38.8 cm distinguish this dark vase from F247, F248a and F248b, other bouquets of gladioli painted in Paris.

Market

The work has been presented twice by Sotheby's

After a sale in New York in 2016, it reappears in Hong Kong in 2021, accompanied by a detailed provenance and bibliography.

Paris

Bouquets speed up color learning

Van Gogh can quickly vary chords, backgrounds and material without waiting for a pattern. The gladioli also offer long structuring lines.

Signature

"Vincent" appears in the lower left corner

The red signature mixes with the table. Its presence contributes to the identification of F248 without becoming an independent decorative element.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the dark vase, asymmetrical stems, orange-reds, drooping yellow flower, burgundy background and green reflections of the container.

  • The central shaft which reaches the upper edge
  • Red flowers layered on the left
  • The little yellow flower isolated near the vase
  • The few green reflections on the black container
  • The red signature in the lower left corner
