À propos de l’œuvre

Oliviers avec les Alpilles dans le fond, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June -July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

The Olives with the Alpilles, F712Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Gnarled olive trees twist in front of the blue ridges of the Alpilles, under a white cloud that swirls like a living form. Van Gogh transforms every part of the landscape into a current: the trees, the ground, the mountains and the sky seem to be crossed by the same energy.

Look at the work

The daytime counterpart of Starry Night

The black and purple trunks take root in soil streaked with green, blue and white. Their crowns are formed of tight curls that almost touch each other, creating a long moving frieze in the center of the painting.

The Alpilles stand behind the trees in ultramarine blue silhouettes. In the clear sky, a large cream cloud wraps around itself and takes up, on another scale, the circular movement of the foliage.

The depth rests on three bands - soil, olive trees, mountains - but the exaggerated contours and repeated curves abolish any impression of immobility.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

MoMA keeps Les Oliviers under number 581.1998. The canvas measures 72.6 × 91.4 cm and bears F712/JH1740.

01

The trees are shaped by the line

Trunks and foliage do not seek botanical precision. Their dark contours, compared by Van Gogh to those of ancient woodcuts, amplify the rhythm of the landscape.

02

The ground seems to be crossed by a torrent

White, green and blue lines go around the roots and form waves. This writing gives the dry ground the mobility of rapid water.

03

The cloud responds to Starry Night

The large white shape rotates in the sky like the stars of the nocturnal web. Daylight and night vision become two variations on the same intensification of nature.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Oliviers F712/JH1740 were painted during Van Gogh's first summer in Saint-Rémy and are kept at MoMA under inventory 581.1998.

Pair

A work thought out with Starry Night

Van Gogh's letters connect this diurnal landscape to its great nocturnal scene. The two paintings go beyond simple observation by color and linear rhythm.

Letter

Deliberately accentuated contours

Sending the painting to Theo, Van Gogh explained that the olive trees, the cloud and the mountains were overall exaggerations, close to the language of ancient prints.

Collection

The Whitney legacy at MoMA

The painting entered the Museum of Modern Art in 1998 through the bequest of Mrs. John Hay Whitney. It is now presented in the galleries on the fifth floor.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the blue-black trunks, the curling crowns, the white waves of the ground, the overseas ridges and the large cream cloud.

  • The dark, gnarled contours of olive trees
  • The white lines that wind across the ground
  • The ultramarine blue Alpilles
  • The central cloud in the shape of a whirlwind
