À propos de l’œuvre

Autoportrait à la pipe et au chapeau de paille, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September -October 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait with pipe and straw hat, F524Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Wearing a large yellow hat and a blowjob on his lips, Van Gogh appears in a pale blue blouse on an almost white background. The face and beard are worked with more precision than the large, fast areas of clothing and decor.

Look at the work

An attentive face emerges from large areas of sketched color

The hat occupies the entire upper width and projects its edge to the front of the ear. The face is squeezed between this yellow mass, the brown pipe and the light collar; greenish eyes look slightly to the side.

The blouse is placed with large turquoise, white and pink lines which sometimes let the support breathe. Around the head, pale blue horizontal touches are enough to separate the silhouette from a luminous background.

This Self-portrait with pipe and straw hat F524/JH1565 is an oil on canvas of 41.9 × 30.1 cm painted in Paris in September - October 1887. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0163V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum describes the work as a deliberately sketched self-portrait. Its summer palette and free touch testify to the rapid assimilation of impressionist painting during Van Gogh's stay in Paris.

01

The hat is constructed like a large striped yellow solid

Curved lines follow the straw and give its volume to the cap. The wide, simplified edge forms a bright screen above the eyes and balances the blue blouse.

02

The face concentrates the most precise mixtures

Pink, yellow, green gray and brown are applied in small touches around the eyes, nose and beard. This tightened pattern contrasts with the summary treatment of the rest of the canvas.

03

The blouse maintains the visible speed of the sketch

Long brushstrokes do not describe any seams or detailed fabric. Their direction is enough to indicate the shoulders, while the light reserves lighten the mass of the bust.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F524/JH1565, inventory s0163V1962 and dimensions 41.9 × 30.1 cm distinguish this Parisian self-portrait with a yellow hat and pipe.

Dating

The museum now places the work in Paris in 1887

The official notice dates from September - October 1887. This attribution links it to the end of the Parisian stay and to the direct influence of the impressionist palette.

Exercise

Van Gogh uses his own face for lack of an affordable model

Since models are expensive, he buys a good mirror and paints himself. The self-portrait thus becomes a regular training to master skin tones and characters.

Ambition

Knowing how to paint his own head should help him paint others

In a letter cited by the museum, Van Gogh explains that the difficulty of his own coloring constitutes a useful test before tackling portraits of men and women.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the vast yellow hat, the greenish look, the wooden pipe, the ocher-streaked beard, the pink touches of the face and the turquoise blouse deliberately left light.

  • The yellow curves which describe the straw of the hat
  • Green eyes turned slightly to the right
  • The little brunette blowjob placed at the edge of the lips
  • The ocher and pink features of the beard
  • The large turquoise strokes of the blouse
