À propos de l’œuvre
Le presbytère de Nuenen au clair de lune, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · November 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
The Presbytery of Nuenen at dusk, F183Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The family presbytery appears from behind, at the moment when an orange disk descends between the roofs. The house, the outbuildings and the large trees are almost black, but a yellow path still guides the eye in the darkness.
Look at the work
The family home seized between day and night
The main building closes on the left with its triangular roof and pale windows. A lower outbuilding occupies the center, exactly in front of the orange star placed on the roofline.
On the right, large trees rise to the upper edge and form a black-green mass. The luminous path winds from the foreground towards the house, connecting the different gray areas.
The Presbytery of Nuenen at Dusk F183/JH952 is a 41 × 54.5 cm oil on canvas painted in November 1885. The work is presented at the Het Noordbrabants Museum under number 99.110.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The canvas does not rest on blue moonlight. Rather, it organizes a transition between the last orange disk, a gray yellow sky and buildings already reclaimed by greenish blacks.
The star is a tiny but decisive point
Its warm orange contrasts with everything else on the palette. Placed between two roofs, it fixes the depth and explains the last light of the sky and the path.
Houses become silhouettes
The facades are painted green-brown and black, with only a few windows and light borders. Van Gogh preserves the architecture without detailing each stone.
Path leads in darkness
A strip of yellow ocher starts from the bottom and turns towards the buildings. It remains the largest luminous surface after the sky and prevents the garden from closing.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The documented Dutch title designates a rear view of the presbytery in the evening. References F183/JH952 and inventory 99.110 specify the identity of the work.
The Van Gogh family presbytery
Vincent's father, Theodorus van Gogh, was a pastor in Nuenen. The family lived in this presbytery, where Vincent stayed from December 1883.
The rear facade and outbuildings
The composition shows the house from the garden, with secondary buildings and large trees. This intimate viewpoint is distinguished from the frontal representations of the building.
An evening scene at dusk
The work is also known in French under the title Au clair de lune. The documented designation "in the evening, seen from behind" and the orange disc here justify the more precise term twilight.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy should keep the orange disk exactly between the roofs, the black greens of the houses and trees, the pale windows, the gray yellow sky and the ocher path that winds towards the bottom.
- The little orange disk between the buildings
- The large dark roof of the presbytery
- Clear windows aligned with the facade
- The almost black mass of trees on the right
- The yellow path that crosses the garden
