À propos de l’œuvre
À la périphérie de Paris, près de Montmartre, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1887 · Montmartre, Paris
On the outskirts of Paris near Montmartre, F1410Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two thin trees frame a woman walking on a clear path; behind the gardens and new houses, the streaked blue sky dominates an edge where the city of Paris overlooks the countryside.
Look at the work
Between city, cultures and Parisian sky
The foreground is largely occupied by a pale road. The walker, placed between two trees, leads her gaze towards vegetable gardens then towards a row of buildings.
The blue sky covers almost half of the leaf and receives oblique white hatching. The greens, purples and ochres are laid in light layers specific to the materials on paper.
Made in Paris during the summer of 1887, this work on paper measures 39.5 × 53.5 cm. It combines gouache, pastel, pencil and ink; it is F1410/JH1286 and bears the number A 2236 at the Stedelijk Museum.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This is not an original oil, but a mixed work on paper. The superposition of gouache, pastel, pencil lines and ink produces a more matte and lighter surface than a canvas.
The sky animates the whole leaf
White and blue hatching gives direction to the wind and prevents the large upper area from remaining empty.
The figure connects the plans
The dark woman, isolated on the clear road, introduces human movement between cultivated countryside and buildings.
The periphery is the real subject
Gardens, trees and buildings mingle: Van Gogh observes the moment when the city transforms its rural margins.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Stedelijk sheet and the catalogs raisonnés identify the mixed technique, dimensions, numbers F1410/JH1286 and inventory A 2236.
A mixed work on paper
Gouache, pastel, pencil and ink combine; the sheet must therefore not present the original as an oil painting.
F1410/JH1286
These references distinguish this view from Montmartre from oils dedicated to neighboring vegetable gardens and mills.
The city advances on the countryside
Van Gogh is interested in cultivated land, roads and construction on the margins of Paris rather than famous monuments.

What the painter must preserve
For an oil interpretation, the painter must translate the matte lightness of the gouache, the hatching of the sky and the drawn passages without weighing down the composition.
- The two thin trees
- The walker in the center
- The vegetable gardens on the outskirts
- Houses under construction
- The vast blue hatched sky
